Smart Snacks for Your Child’s Smile

By the time your child is six years old, their permanent teeth will start coming in.  If cared for properly, these teeth will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Whether you are a resident of Brighton or Ferntree Gully of Victoria, Centre for Dentistry is available to provide comprehensive services to children of all ages.  It’s important for your child to be seen for a check and clean twice per year.  But at home, there are additional ways you can help your child maintain a healthy smile (which includes more than just regular brushing and flossing.)

One of which is helping them select healthy foods.

Children love snacks.  With so many unhealthy, sugary options out there, it can be overwhelming deciding which ones to choose.  Here are some things to remember the next time you are shopping for your little ones to munch on.


Crispy Fruits and Vegetables:

Raw fruits and vegetables are great for teeth.  The harder texture of certain produce (like carrots) helps to remove plaque from your child teeth.  Apples and celery are also very good choices.



Water is the best drink available.  However, some children aren’t fond of drinking plain water. To make it more palatable, water can be mixed with a sugar free flavouring if your child wishes.

Soft drinks, juice, and sports drinks are very acidic and have a high sugar content.  These should be avoided when possible.  If your child indulges now and then, they should brush their teeth afterward, or at least rinse with water, to help prevent the sugar from sitting on the teeth.



Xylitol is a natural sweetener found in many gums that also helps prevent tooth decay.  If your child likes to chew gum, be sure you provide them with a sugar free option.
